Pada tahun 1988 bersama dengan saudaranya John Knoll yang bekerja pada Industrial Light & Magic, Thomas Knoll merubah program buatannya tersebut menjadi program penyunting gambar penuh yang diberi nama ImagePro.
Thomas Knoll kemudian merubah nama ImagePro menjadi Photoshop dan bekerja dalam jangka pendek dengan produsen scanner Barneyscan untuk mendistribusikan salinan dari program tersebut dengan slide scanner. Tidak lama kemudian Adobe tertarik dan membeli lisensi Photoshop dan mendistribusikannya pada bulan September 1988.
